Goldfish are the messiest animals we own, and one of the others is a duck. Four goldfish, one 40-gallon tank, and for the first year I fought cloudy water every single week. The fix wasn't a magic product. It was accepting that goldfish need about twice the filtration the box recommends, and then buying accordingly. This is the filter setup that finally worked for Snowy, Pumpkin, Peaches and Goldie, plus the alternatives I'd choose in a smaller or bigger tank.
Quick answer
For most goldfish tanks (20 to 55 gallons), a hang-on-back filter rated for at least double your tank size, plus a sponge filter as backup, is the sweet spot. Our tank runs an AquaClear HOB and a double sponge filter. If you have a 55 or bigger, or you hate noise, go canister.
Why goldfish need more filter than other fish
Goldfish don't have a stomach. Food goes in, waste comes out, and a lot of it. They also grow big; Snowy is pushing six inches and Goldie is still growing at five years old. More fish mass means more ammonia, and ammonia is what kills goldfish in tanks that "look clean."
A filter does three jobs: mechanical (catches floating gunk), biological (grows bacteria that turn ammonia into less harmful nitrate), and chemical (carbon, optional). For goldfish, biological is the one that matters. You want as much surface area for bacteria as you can get. That's why I like filters with big, rinseable media baskets over cartridge filters you're told to throw away every month. Throwing away a cartridge throws away your bacteria.
The rule I use: add up the gallons-per-hour (GPH) of all filters and aim for 8 to 10 times the tank volume. A 40-gallon tank wants 320 to 400 GPH of total turnover. The box will say a filter is "for tanks up to 50 gallons." For goldfish, divide that number in half.

I'd put one on any tank 55 gallons and up, or on a 40 breeder in a bedroom. The downside is cleaning: it's a 20-minute job with hoses and a bucket, every month or two. On a HOB it's five minutes.

It can't clog badly, it can't suck up a fish, it can't fail mechanically, and the sponge is a bacteria condo. We run one in the corner opposite the AquaClear. When the HOB impeller quit one weekend, the sponge filter carried the tank for three days and nobody noticed.
It's also the right choice for a quarantine or hospital tank, or a tank with fry.

Check price on AmazonThis is the filter that came with our first tank kit. It works. The catch is the cartridge system: the box wants you to replace the cartridge monthly, which resets your bacteria. Don't. Rinse it in old tank water and only replace it when it's falling apart. Better yet, cut a piece of sponge to fit the slot and never buy a cartridge again.

Cycling: the step that makes any filter work
A brand-new filter does nothing biological for the first few weeks. The bacteria have to grow. If you add fish to an uncycled tank, ammonia spikes and fish get sick. Cycle the tank first (add a pinch of fish food daily and test until ammonia and nitrite read zero and nitrate shows up), or move a used sponge from an established tank into your new filter to jump-start it. That second trick is why I keep two sponges in the tank: one is always ready to seed a new setup.
Mistakes I made so you don't have to
- Rinsing the filter sponge under the tap. Chlorine kills the bacteria. Use old tank water in a bucket.
- Replacing all media at once. Same problem. Swap one piece at a time.
- Trusting the box rating. "Up to 50 gallons" means 25 for goldfish.
- Cranking the flow to max. Fancy goldfish get pushed around. Peaches hid behind the heater for a week until I turned it down.
- Skipping the test kit. Clear water can still be toxic. Numbers don't lie.
