We bought the wrong cage first. It was tall, skinny, and looked great in the pet store. Carmella flew into the side of it twice on the first day and then sat on the top perch giving me a look I still think about. Budgies fly sideways. A tall cage is a hallway to them, and a hallway is not a home.
So this is the guide I wish somebody had handed me: what actually matters in a budgie cage when you have two or three birds, the four cages I'd put my own birds in, and the one I'd skip.
Quick answer
For two or three budgies, get the widest cage you can fit, with bar spacing of 1/2 inch or less, and a big front door you can get both hands through. Our trio lives in the Prevue flight cage and I'd buy it again tomorrow. If space is tight, the Yaheetech on a rolling stand is the compromise that doesn't feel like one.
What matters in a budgie cage (and what doesn't)
Width first, height last
Budgies fly horizontally. Height is nice for climbing, but flight is exercise, and exercise is what keeps a budgie from getting fat and grumpy. For two birds I'd want at least 30 inches wide. For three, 32 inches or more. Ours is 31 inches and Plantini still manages a decent lap.
Bar spacing: 1/2 inch, no exceptions
Budgies are small and curious. Anything wider than 1/2 inch and a determined bird can push its head through, panic, and get stuck. Plenty of "medium bird" cages have 5/8 inch spacing. Read the listing carefully. This is the one spec I won't bend on.
Horizontal bars on at least two sides
They climb. A lot. Horizontal bars turn the whole side of the cage into a jungle gym. Vertical-only cages look sleek, and the birds hate them.
Doors and feeder access
A big front door means you can rearrange toys without a budgie escaping past your elbow. External feeder doors mean you can refill seed without opening the main door at all. Carmella has escaped through a feeder door exactly once. It was enough.
Powder coating, not paint
Cheap painted cages chip, and budgies chew bars. Powder-coated or stainless is safer. Avoid anything with a strong chemical smell out of the box; let it air out for a day regardless.
A seed guard that works
Budgies flick seed. Physics does the rest. A good debris guard cuts the floor cleanup by more than half. The Vision cage wins here by a mile.

Assembly took me about 40 minutes and one wrong guess about which panel goes where. The pull-out tray is deep enough that a week of shredded toy doesn't overflow it. The perches it ships with are plain dowels, so plan to swap those for natural wood.

It's taller than it is wide, which I said not to do, but the width is still respectable and the rolling stand means it lives in a corner and gets wheeled out for cleaning. For an apartment, that's the trade.
The bottom shelf on the stand holds a month of pellets, which sounds minor until you've stored bird food in a kitchen cabinet next to the cereal.

The tradeoffs: it's plastic-heavy, the doors are smaller, and it's shorter on flight width than the Prevue. It's plenty for two budgies. For three it's fine but cozy.

Setting the cage up so they actually use it
A big cage with two dowel perches is still a boring cage. Here's our layout, which took a few months of budgie feedback to settle.
- Perches at different heights and widths. Natural wood, assorted thickness. Budgies need to grip different diameters to keep their feet healthy. The dowels that ship with the cage all measure the same and that leads to sore feet.
- Keep the flight path open. Perches at both ends, toys along the sides, nothing hanging in the middle. Carmella will thank you by not crashing.
- Food and water at opposite ends so they have to move.
- Two of everything. Two water dishes, two food dishes. With three birds there's always somebody guarding a dish.
- Rotate toys weekly. Three toys in the cage, three in a drawer. Swap. To a budgie, a toy that's been gone a week is brand new.
Pharmacist note: put the cage where there's daylight but no drafts, and never in the kitchen. Overheated non-stick pans release fumes that can kill a small bird quickly. Our cage is in the living room where they can see us and yell about it.
What I'd skip
Round cages (no corners means no safe spot to retreat to), anything with bar spacing over 1/2 inch, and the ornate decorative cages with scrollwork. Budgies get toes caught in scrollwork. Keep it plain.

How big should a cage be for two budgies?
At least 30 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 18 inches tall, with 1/2 inch bar spacing. Wider is better than taller because budgies fly horizontally. Our three live in a 31-inch flight cage and use every inch of the width.
Can three budgies live in one cage?
Yes, if the cage is wide enough (32 inches or more is ideal) and you provide duplicate food and water dishes. Watch for bullying during the first weeks; Carmella tested Plantini for about a month before they settled.
Is a tall cage bad for budgies?
Not bad, but wasted. Budgies rarely use vertical space for flight. A tall narrow cage gives them a hallway instead of a runway. Prioritize width.
What bar spacing is safe for budgies?
1/2 inch or less. Wider spacing risks a bird pushing its head through and getting stuck.
Do I need a stand for a budgie cage?
Only if you want the cage at eye level or off the floor. A sturdy table works. A rolling stand is a real convenience for cleaning day.
